Comics course for teens in Miami
I was contacted recently by the Miami Wolfsonian Museum of Florida International University to design and teach a two-week workshop for Miami teens at the end of this month.
Can’t wait to spend a couple of weeks in the June heat! No, seriously, I love Miami, and I’m really glad to have such a nice long chunk of time there.
I’m blogging my course development over at dw-wp.com and would love feedback on it. Take a look!
DWWP website redesign: come, look!
We’ve just launched a redesign of the website for our textbook, Drawing Words & Writing Pictures. We had added a blog and other new features to make the site an essential resource for comics learners and especially for teachers and librarians who use comics in any number of contexts.
We’ll posting new material regularly so be sure to add us to your RSS feeder. You can also follow us on Twitter to get updates, links, and news.
This is very much a beta version so have a look around and send us comments at dwandwp(a)gmail.com. We are particularly interested in hearing from teachers: how can we make the site more useful for you, whether or not you use our textbook?
Life Sucks wins Panda Award
The 2009 Panda Award, a new award given by the libraries of international schools in China, was awarded to Life Sucks for 2009 in the mature readers category. That category was won in 2008 by Stephanie Meyers for Eclipse (!).
I just received an awesome scroll, painted by Wang Hai Tao, from Nadine Rosevear, the coordinator of the program, who is a middle school librarian at the International School of Beijing. So much better than a slab of acrylic or a brass plaque! Take notes, award-givers!

We sent the schools a goony picture of ourselves in thanks for their appreciation. This photo was taken the only time that Warren, Gabe, and I all met in person (in 2008, after Life Sucks came out!).
Life Sucks is a Maverick
You already knew that, but now it’s official. The YART (Young Adult Round Table) of the TLA (Texas Library Association) named Life Sucks to its 2009 Texas Maverick Graphic Novels list. Thanks, Texas!
